Emigrating with pets from Germany to Paraguay requires careful planning and the fulfilment of specific entry requirements. Below you will find current information (as of November 2024) for dogs, cats and birds, including required documents, responsible authorities and estimated costs.

1. General requirements for dogs and cats:

  • Health certificate:

    • A health certificate issued by an official veterinarian confirming that the animal is in good health.

    • The certificate must be certified by the competent authority and then legalised by the Paraguayan embassy.

    • Validity: The health certificate must not be older than 10 days at the time of entry.

  • Vaccinations:

    • Up-to-date vaccination certificate with proof of vaccinations against rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and leptospirosis.

    • The rabies vaccination must have been carried out at least 30 days and no more than 12 months prior to entry.

  • Identification:

    • Microchip implantation according to ISO standard 11784 or 11785.

    • If a different microchip is used, the owner must carry an appropriate reader.

2. Specific requirements for birds:

  • Health certificate:

    • A health certificate issued by an official veterinarian confirming that the bird is in good health.

    • The certificate must be certified by the competent authority and then legalised by the Paraguayan embassy.

    • Validity: The health certificate must not be older than 10 days at the time of entry.

  • Quarantine:

    • Quarantine regulations may apply. It is recommended that you obtain information from the Paraguayan authorities or the embassy in advance.

  • Notarisation of the health certificate:

    • Notarisation is carried out by the responsible regional council or the state authority in your federal state.

  • Transport conditions: Check with your chosen airline for specific pet transport conditions, including crate requirements and any fees.

  • Import restrictions: Certain dog breeds or exotic animal species may be subject to import restrictions. It is recommended that you obtain information from the Paraguayan authorities or embassy in advance.

  • Quarantine regulations: There are currently no general quarantine requirements for dogs and cats entering Paraguay. However, specific regulations may apply to birds. It is recommended that you obtain information from the Paraguayan authorities or embassy in advance.
